Meet our new Interns v2 x

4th September 2020

Three new budding civil engineers join the team

September is a month for new beginnings and decisions about further education and career paths. This month at PJS it is about expanding our space and welcoming our 3 new team members. We have taken on additional office space at Winking Hill Farm and will be bringing our team members back to the office safely.

We are delighted at PJS to have recruited three new prospective engineers into the sector. As part of our ongoing relationship with Nottingham Trent University, we have two interns joining on placements and have recruited a new trainee engineer, taking our team at PJS to 16 in just three years.

Meet our new Trainee Engineer Safwan Ahmed

Trainee Engineer Saf joined us at the end of July. He is passionate about structural engineering and is progressing a Masters degree in Structural Engineering at Nottingham Trent University. He is looking forward to working with the wider structural engineering design team, particularly concentrating on reinforced concrete design and expanding his Revit skills.

Saf sets the bar high and believes in giving 100% at all times so that his work will meet the impeccable standards expected at PJS. In just a few weeks he describes the job as really interesting and so satisfying to see his designs already being considered and progressed.

He comments “at PJS the challenge is to push and think outside the box. This valuable experience as a trainee will help me expand my knowledge of the industry.”

Inspired by projects such as HS2 and China’s Three Gorges Dam, Saf is interested in infrastructure projects that will/have enormous positive impacts on a national scale.

Working as a trainee engineer alongside the senior members of the team, this new role is one of 4 created during the pandemic and an example of our company’s ongoing commitment to develop opportunities for emerging talent within the industry.

Saf enjoys sports, specifically playing football and golf. From Luton, he also enjoys following his favourite local team Manchester United!

Welcome to the team Saf.

We would also like to introduce William and Eleanor this month who have both joined us on intern placements. At PJS we believe it is beneficial for students to apply their academic education and expand their knowledge working with a team of experienced multi-disciplinary engineers.

Meet our new intern William Mayne

William Mayne COL

William joined our intern programme from Nottingham Trent University at the end of July having just completed his second year of a BEng in Civil Engineering. He describes being inspired at a young age while travelling with family in Australia. Both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House caught his imagination and he describes how overwhelmed he was by the amazing feats of engineering and design.

Since starting his degree William has had the opportunity to practice some skills like setting out and interpreting topographical surveys and data. He comments “I am hoping in the future to specialise in the structural analysis and design side of Civil Engineering so I can become a key part of designing complex projects.  I have a passion for finding environmentally sustainable solutions.”

William enjoys travelling and has visited some extraordinary places such as Twelve Apostles in Australia, the Niagara Falls in Canada and the wildlife in South Africa. Being at home in the great outdoors William has also completed the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards. Will Mayne golf photo 1 page 0 v2

Ellie is keen to broaden her technical knowledge and develop her skills in detailed report writing whilst exploring the many different aspects of civil engineering. Ellie is looking forward to getting stuck in at PJS and putting theory into practice in a working environment.

Ellie Reid Nottingham Rugby

Like Saf and William, Ellie enjoys her team sports and whilst at University has represented NTU in Women’s Rugby. Ellie has also been a swimming coach since a young age and more recently completed a 26-mile trek along Hadrian’s Wall, raising money for Alzheimer’s society. Well done Ellie and great to have you join our team! We have a keen new competitor in our office pool and table tennis competitions. Plus, we are looking forward to hearing the ukulele when you’re ready!

Paul Smith, MD comments “I am blown away by the enthusiasm and creativity of our younger team members. Their desire to learn and participate shows great confidence which is essential in our industry. We believe in harnessing exceptional talent from the start and creating opportunities at PJS for people to learn and grow in their career. Welcome to the team Saf, Will and Ellie we hope that your time with us will be educational, rewarding and of course enjoyable.”
