Summer Reflections - Hello Autumn

Summer crossed us like a breeze, and before we knew it, we were inviting Autumn leaves and Halloween decorations to our doorsteps.

In reflection, we were able to be out and about so much more while the sun was shining, and in case you missed it, we took this opportunity to celebrate the team’s success and a noteworthy milestone that we achieved in June – PJS turned 6! Our team enjoyed a beautiful day out with a delicious barbeque and a cruise party. It is incredibly rewarding to see how far we have come and how we are continuing to grow.

At PJS, we are always plotting something (pun intended). It had been a busy few months for the team over the summer, and we are readily looking forward to the final quarter of the year with some exciting new projects on board.

With that, we bring to you a brief roundup of what we have recently been up to. Our latest news update is packed with employee achievements, team expansions, and special goodbyes. Keep an eye out for a furry surprise!

Congratulations to Will and Antony on the completion of their degree

PJS continues to celebrate strengthening our talented team further with William Mayne completing BEng exams last month and achieving an upper second class honours degree from Nottingham Trent University! Will joined us back in 2020 on his placement year and stayed with us as a Trainee Civil Engineer, completing challenging projects while learning and mastering his skills. Now a Graduate Civil Engineer, Will is predominantly involved in highways and infrastructure design within the housebuilding sector.

Similar to Will, our Senior Structural Engineer, Antony Freeman, also completed his BEng final exams with a first class from Nottingham Trent University! Antony has over 11 years of experience in Structural Engineering. His skills include the design, detailing, and management of a variety of structural projects utilising a range of materials including steel, timber, concrete, and masonry. As for the next step in his career, Antony is preparing to complete his IEng review with the ICE, while also proceeding onto his MSc in Structural Engineering from NTU.

Antony

Hearty congratulations from everyone at PJS, Will and Antony. We are so proud of you!

Continuous growth for PJS Consulting Engineers

After an exciting recruitment process over spring, we appointed new talents to our team.

Welcome to Jacob Vernon who joined us as a Graduate Civil Engineer from University of Nottingham.

Jacob’s approach is grounded in innovative designing solutions and his new role is unlocking challenging sites for him. Passionate about all things CAD, Jacob has previously worked with domestic, commercial, and public sector clients and is involved with each project stage. He has a range of experience including designs for Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), Flood Risk Assessments, and Habitat and Species Assessments.

“Having first discovered Sustainable Drainage Systems in an A level Geography lesson, I became fascinated, and knew then I wanted a career relating to this field. My experience at both the University of Nottingham and on my placement year confirmed this passion and has only encouraged me to become a civil engineer,” explains Jacob.

Jacob was awarded the University Prize for being the ‘Undergraduate Graduand with the highest overall average in Civil Engineering.’ Additionally, he was also a Student Switch Off ambassador at UoN, which is a student accommodation sustainability campaign that takes place at universities across Europe.

When not at work or trying to stay creative with his next project in mind, you’ll find Jacob either swimming, on a run, or a nice, long walk. He dedicates his evenings to learning Italian or enjoying tea and biscuits in front of the TV with his Springer Spaniel, Oli.

We are massively pleased to have Jacob in our team, bringing in new perspective and a curious energy.

PJS Consulting Engineers have been organically growing since its inception in 2017. If you know us, you’d know we are always keen on inspiring and guiding young engineers; we have gained an abundance of experience doing so over the years.

We also have some exciting projects coming up and we are all ready to gear up for these.

Congratulations Adrian!

Congratulations to Adrian McVey on his promotion from Senior Geo-Environmental Engineer to Principal Geo-Environmental Engineer! Additionally, Adrian will also be taking on the role of our Health and Safety lead.

Over the years, Adrian has undertaken site investigation works on a multitude of brownfield sites comprising former commercial dry cleaners, petrol stations, sawmills, oil storage depots, former airfields, military land among countless other industrial land types. He has worked on long term development and remediation projects for residential, commercial, and private sector land uses with a development value of circa £1 billion.

Thank you for all your hard work, Aide! We look forward to supporting you in your progress with PJS.

All the best, Jamie and Matt

While we welcomed the new members to our team, it was with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to Jamie Porter and Matt Leask.

Jamie’s year-long placement with us came to an end in June and he will now return to Nottingham Trent University to complete the final year of his studies.

As per tradition, we celebrated their valued contributions to the team with pizzas and sweet treats for the office.

Jamie commented, “Working at PJS has given me a rewarding and true insight into civil engineering. I was warmly welcomed into a collaborative and supportive environment where my ideas were valued, and my skills were nurtured. The team were always willing to guide and mentor me which allowed me to develop my problem-solving skills and work through tasks efficiently.

“The projects I worked on were engaging and challenging, giving me the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge I had acquired at university. By utilising my teams extensive, collective knowledge and learning an array of engineering software’s essential to our field, I have become a well-rounded engineer. Overall, I am grateful for the invaluable skills and experiences PJS has given me over my placement year.”

Similarly, after an insightful year with PJS, Matt Leask has moved on to pursue an opportunity closer to his home in Derby.

Matt comments that he thoroughly enjoyed his role as a Principal Engineer at PJS.

“The company works on a wide and interesting variety of projects, for a number of prestigious clients. I was fortunate enough to work on two Sustainable Urban Extension schemes, undertaking flood risk assessment, and drainage and highway design. (PJS) benefits from being a family run business in that everyone feels part of the team and is well supported, but it is also a professional environment.

“The office is excellent - modern and spacious as well as being well located. I gained Chartership with the ICE whilst at PJS and the company and management were very supportive during this process.”

Needless to say, it was a pleasure having Jamie and Matt in our team and we wish them the very best for the future!

Final Note

Our team has grown and strengthened even further this year and we are just as passionate as ever about delivering high quality solutions. If you would like to discuss any of our services, please do get in touch - we’d love to hear from you!

We hope you have a fulfilling and prosperous Autumn.
