October 2020 news update x

30th October 2020

Winter news

Like many businesses at this time of year we are already planning for the new year, working flexibly and safely in the office and from home. At PJS we reflect on the work that has been completed for submission and received approvals this year as well as begin scheduling new work with our clients for 2021. The team overall are looking forward to the final quarter months with some exciting new projects on the board and to our social events again when we are permitted.

Our geo team are still preparing for the winter site visits and collectively at PJS we are anticipating more approvals for the design work completed by the end of this year. Our staff are all eager to get back working together at “The Barn”, but for now we continue to follow the current guidelines, rotating staff and working from our head office or home to ensure everyone is safe and well.

The approvals keep coming...

In October we were delighted to receive planning permission approvals for the second phase Reserve Matters and consent granted for 160 dwellings at Twigworth on behalf of our clients Bovis Homes.

The development, which we mentioned earlier this year is estimated at £195 million and comprises 725 dwellings. We received the reserve matters planning for phase 1 and the S104 technical approval for offsite sewers back in February this year which are now in construction.

Developments with an engineering difference

Our structural team have been really excited lately to be reviewing work in association with Ilke Homes.  An innovative house builder that are constructing new homes using galvanised steel frames and technology that allow developments to work with a landscape. These ‘pods’ are described as being the revolutionary and will work be more efficient in time and costs when it comes to building homes and from the outside work seamlessly within a local area.

Developments within Nottingham that are looking to include these modular builds include East Leake, Beeston and Arnold. Our Senior Structural Engineer, Adam Pozylo and his team describe the projects as "innovative and dynamic, adding a whole new dimension to structural designs within house building."

Our geo team is growing...

Geo team 2020

Despite the interruptions to business life this year for many our geotechnical services have been in high demand and the team are busier than ever. We were delighted to have our first graduate engineer, Nicholas Brown join the team from the University of Derby. Nicholas holds a degree in contaminated land and fresh water management and with previous work experience with Survey Hub and Greenfield Environment. His induction to the team might have been a virtual one to start but has settled in well with all the PJS team.

In October we also welcomed Oliver Sharp, who joined as a Geotechnical Project Engineer. Previously a Contracts Engineer, Oliver was based in the South East and has a great understanding of the full life cycle of a project.  Having been heavily involved in procurement he was responsible for all sales for ground improvement solutions for clients and has gained experience in piling.

He recounts a notable project at Woburn Sands near Milton Keynes, where he completed the project for a residential development which covered tendering, design, estimating right through to operations, site setup, and installation.

Oliver is looking forward to developing and gaining more experience within the ground engineering industry and working closely with Martin, Vinny and Nicholas who also joined us as a graduate engineer earlier this summer.

A graduate of Nottingham Trent too Oliver is a keen cyclist, lifeguard and musician so will definitely fit in well with our creative team here at PJS.

It has been a different life for our graduates so far..

As university’s opened up again this autumn we said good luck to Jack Fisher as he headed back to complete his final year in Civil Engineering at Nottingham Trent. Jack joined last year as one of our interns along with Louis Hunter.

Our graduate team have helped us to make our the programme even more progressive and we are delighted to announce that Louis will be staying with us. Having switched from full to part time study in order to continue working in the industry, while completing his degree Louis continues be an integral part of the team. As one of our first interns too Louis has been great support to Ellie William, Nick and Oliver who joined us this year.

Managing Director, Paul reflects this month saying “PJS is in a good position as a business. People count and having the right supportive colleagues that are likeminded can make all the difference at times like this. September has been a successful month here at PJS, despite 2-meter distancing, desk allocations, hand sanitizer, cancelled golf days and weddings! the team have been amazing as ever, so thank you to everyone.”
